Defreyne, Luc

After his medical studies at the Ghent University in Belgium, Luc Defreyne enjoyed an education first in internal medicine and later in radiology in Germany. As a specialist in Radiology, he worked at the University Hospital of Saarland, Germany as a staff-member surveying the interventional activities of the department. In  1993, he returned to Belgium to accept a position as head of the department of Interventional Radiology at his Alma Mater, Gent University Hospital. In 2005, he submitted his Ph.D. and was appointed as a Professor in Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology at the Ghent University. The department of IR, which also includes interventional neuroradiology, has now 5 staff-members.

From 2006 to 2008 he was the president of the section of Interventional Radiology of the Belgian Society of Radiology. Since 2009, he is founding member and the secretary of the Belgian Society for Interventional and Therapeutical Neuroradiology. He is a longstanding member of the Belgian, German, European Society of Radiology and Intentional Radiology (CIRSE). He is a founding faculty member of the Global Embolisation Systems and Technologies (GEST) congress.
