De Herdt, Veerle

Veerle De Herdt graduated from medical school at the University of Ghent in 2004. She then began her clinical training as a neurologist at the Ghent University Hospital. In 2007, she had a clinical training at the Epilepsy Center of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, USA. She started her pre-doctoral research in the Reference Center for Refractory Epilepsy and the Laboratory for Clinical and Experimental Neurophysiology of Prof. Paul Boon as a Junior Researcher of the Research Foundation Flanders. In 2009, she defended her PhD thesis entitled ‘Vagus nerve stimulation for refractory epilepsy: efficacy and mechanism of action in animal models and in patients’. In 2009, she obtained a BNS Research Grant for Young Investigators with the project ‘Neurophysiological investigation in patients with cerebrovascular diseases’, which she performed at the Department of Neurovascular Diseases, CHRU, Lille, France, in a cooperation with Prof. Didier Leys and Prof. Charlotte Cordonnier. In 2011, she completed her clinical training in Ghent to become a neurologist. Since 2011, she is member of the Executive Committee of the Belgian Neurological Society and since 2012, co-editor of the Acta Neurologica Belgica. Currently, she is working as a staff member at the Department of Neurology at Ghent University Hospital with a main clinical and research interest in epilepsy and stroke.
